ELM Program
The Educational Leadership and Ministry (ELM) program prepares students of all denominations for leadership and ministry in schools and colleges.
ELM focuses on preparing leaders to serve as ordained and lay chaplains, administrators, and teachers of religion in a variety of schools. It addresses some of the factors involved in the spiritual and moral formation of primary and secondary school students. It provides insight into the roles and responsibilities of those who hold other leadership positions in schools.
The program also seeks to help future leaders understand and prepare for various types of chaplaincy found at universities and colleges.
Sponsored by Berkeley Divinity School, ELM offers a Certificate in Educational Leadership and Ministry in addition to the MAR or MDiv degree. The certificate program is built around a core of three courses: Models and Methods of College and University Chaplaincy; Leadership Ministry in Schools; and an advanced seminar course covering topics relevant to leadership ministry in colleges and schools.
A preaching course and electives, together with an internship in a school, college or other educational institution, round out the program. Students also benefit from field trips, presentations by visiting practitioners, and help with placements in schools and colleges.
