IN THE SPIRIT’S TETHER

A Centenary Celebration of William Palmer Ladd and Percy Dearmer at Berkeley Divinity School
Registration Now Open!

January 25-26 2019

William Palmer Ladd, Dean of Berkeley Divinity School 1918-1941, was one of the leaders of the Liturgical Movement in the United States. Appointed Dean of Berkeley in 1918, he sought to expose students to the leading minds of a wider Church. His Prayer Book Interleaves influenced a generation of liturgists around the Church and foreshadowed the Prayer Book of 1979.

The first and perhaps most influential of those visiting professors at Berkeley Divinity School was Percy Dearmer, author of The Parson’s Handbook (1899) and co-editor with Ralph Vaughn Williams of The English Hymnal (1906). For Ladd, 1918-1919 was a time of great collaboration with Dearmer, which bore particular fruit in Ladd’s own liturgical leadership that eventually influenced the 1979 Book of Common Prayer of The Episcopal Church.

These two great liturgists were also keen advocates for the social witness of the Church, and opponents of any narrow approach to worship that failed to address its connection with life in general and the demands of justice.

This symposium marking the centenary of Ladd’s appointment and of Dearmer’s term as visiting professor comes as the Church considers liturgical renewal again. Speakers will reflect on the contributions of these remarkable figures and the challenges of the present and future. The title is drawn from Dearmer’s hymn text “Draw us in the Spirit’s tether” which includes the stanza:

All our meals and all our living
Make as sacraments of Thee,
That by caring, helping, giving
We may true disciples be.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
We will serve Thee faithfully.
