Dean McGowan’s Announcment of Prof. Thomas’ Appointment
I write with mixed feelings to share with you the news that the Rev’d Dr Gabrielle Thomas has accepted appointment as Assistant Professor of Anglican Studies at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University from Fall 2021.
This appointment, which is on the tenure track, is a great credit to Gabby, whose work as a faculty member, advisor, scholar, and trustee has been a wonderful contribution to Berkeley Divinity School and to Yale over this year and last. We have all benefitted from her thoughtful presence, deep learning, great commitment, and lively faith.
Her appointment here at Yale as lecturer was for a fixed term of three years, and while we would have been glad to have her with us for that full term, it was inevitable that she seek an academic appointment with the prospect of tenure when one arose. Emory, which is seeking to provide greater support for students in formation for the Episcopal Church, undertook a very competitive search this year, and her success reflects her established skill as teacher and her significant scholarly achievement, as well as her great potential. We wish her well, and look forward to seeing her further work for Church and academy.
Berkeley’s Anglican Studies curriculum will be led in the next academic year by a team incuding the Dean (Prayer Book), the Rev’d Dr Justin Crisp (Anglican Way 1 and 2), Bishop Ian Douglas (Anglican Way 2), and the contributions of a new Associate Dean. In 2022 we will welcome the Rev’d Professor Teresa Morgan from Oxford as she takes up an appointment at Yale, supported by Berkeley’s Walter H. Gray chair, to teach Anglican and early Christian studies.
Please join me in congratulating, and thanking, the Rev’d Dr Gabrielle Thomas meanwhile.
