March 10, 2023

Oxford scholar, priest, and social activist Jane Shaw returned to YDS and Berkeley on April 4 to deliver the inaugural Annand Lecture: “Mysticism and Social Justice.” The lecture in Niebuhr Hall was sponsored by YDS in association with Berkeley Divinity School’s Annand Program for Spiritual Formation, named in honor of Berkeley’s tenth dean, James E. Annand, which provides spiritual formation and direction for all YDS students.
Shaw has spoken at Berkeley on two previous occasions, as Cheney Lecturer in 2016 and as guest speaker in 2019 at “In the Spirit’s Tether: A Centenary Celebration of William Palmer Ladd and Pearcy Dearmer at Berkeley.”
Prior to her current position at Oxford, where she is Professor of the History of Religion and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, Shaw was Dean for Religious Life at Stanford University. She is the author of Miracles in Enlightenment England, Octavia, Daughter of God: The Story of a Female Messiah and her Followers, and Gen Z Explained: The Art of Living in a Digital Age.
