Full Tuition Scholarships

January 29, 2022

As of the coming 2022-23 academic year, Berkeley Divinity School, along with our partners Yale Divinity School and Andover Newton Seminary, will be offering full tuition scholarships to all entering students with demonstrated financial need. In addition, a growing number of Berkeley students and others at YDS will be eligible for stipends to support students with ministerial promise, as well as those committed to work for social justice.

This important step to make world-class theological education more generally accessible is the result of extensive fundraising efforts that have been generously supported by Berkeley trustees, alums, and other donors. It reflects a common effort among the partners on the Quad to make the outstanding experience of Yale education with ministerial formation open to all, and in time to ease the pressure on graduates who have often had to carry significant debt.

Following Dean Greg Sterling of YDS’s announcement on behalf of all parties on January 14, Berkeley Dean Andrew McGowan hailed the achievement of full tuition scholarships as a signficant milestone for Episcopal and Anglican students at YDS:

“The benefits of education at Yale are many, and constitute a privilege; there is no good news in heaping privilege only for those who already have plenty. This is a huge step for all of us at Berkeley and YDS, but not the end of the road. We now want to continue both to support all YDS students more and more effectively, and to recruit students who reflect great potential for faithful service as well as representing the diversity of the national and global Church.”
