Berkeley Divinity School will see some new faces and roles in the Spring of 2020, as Dean Andrew McGowan takes a sabbatical in the first year of his second term as Dean and President.

Associate Dean and Director of Formation Cathy George will be acting Dean of Berkeley in Spring, by agreement of the BDS board of trustees and Dean Greg Sterling. As well as taking overall responsibility for the operation of the School, Dean George will continue teaching Anglican Studies, leadership, and preaching.

The Reverend Dr. Roger Ferlo will also join Berkeley Divinity School for Spring Term 2020 as Visiting Associate Dean for Community Life. Dr. Ferlo has served parishes in New York, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, and has lectured and preached worldwide, including as professor at the Virginia Theological Seminary. He is president and professor emeritus of the Bexley Seabury Seminary, is currently Scholar in Residence at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and serves as president of the corporation of the Anglican Theological Review. He also serves as the chair of the board of the Episcopal Evangelism Society.

While assisting the Berkeley community during his time here, Dr. Ferlo will preach and preside regularly in St. Luke’s Chapel, serve as an academic advisor, and regularly be available to students for pastoral care. He will also teach a course at YDS on the Pastoral Offices. Roger and his wife Anne Harlan will arrive in New Haven early January 2020.

Dean Andrew McGowan and Dr Felicity Harley McGowan will be visiting scholars at Harris Manchester College within the University of Oxford, UK, in Spring of 2020. Both have been awarded Conant Grants from the Episcopal Church Foundation to support their research. Dean McGowan will resume the dean’s role in the Fall of 2020.
