Berkeley Confers Honorary Doctorates at Convocation

During the 2021 Convocation Evensong on October 19, Berkeley conferred honorary doctorates on the Rt. Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Bishop of the Diocese of Indianapolis, and the Most Rev. Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of the province of Cape Town. Owing to pandemic-related travel restrictions, Makgoba received his degree in absentia. 

Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows

A graduate of Smith College (architecture/urban studies) and Cornell University (historic preservation), Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows earned her M.Div. at CDSP. In addition to her deep commitment to historic preservation of religious buildings, stewardship, and development, her ministry has also focused on race and class reconciliation. Her experience in the Church includes parish ministry, college chaplaincy, and diocesan administration. In 2016 she was elected the 11thbishop of Indianapolis, the first Black woman elected a diocesan bishop in the Episcopal Church.

Thabo Makgoba

A native of Johannesburg, Makgoba earned his BA and MA at the University of Witwatersrand before training for the priesthood at St. Paul’s College in Grahamstown and, later, earning a PhD from the University of Cape Town. He served in various church positions before being elected bishop suffragan and then diocesan bishop of Cape Town. In 2008 he was elected Archbishop of Cape Town and Primate, the youngest person to hold that office. Makgoba has also served the Anglican Communion in various capacities, including chair of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network.
