Berkeley to Host Dinner at General Convention

The triennial General Convention of The Episcopal Church will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah starting June 25.  Berkeley will host a dinner on Tuesday evening, June 30 for alumni and friends of the seminary.

During the eight-day gathering the bishops and deputies, which includes both lay and clergy leaders, will elect a new presiding bishop.  The current presiding bishop, The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, is stepping down at the end of her nine-year term.

The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop, which consists of 18 ordained and ten lay members, is working to identify candidates to assume the position of presiding bishop.

This year’s convention will also take up and consider reports of two task forces launched at the convention in 2012: the Task Force on the Study of Marriage and the Task Force to Reimagine the Episcopal Church.

The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. The Convention is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops. The work at Convention is carried out by deputies and bishops representing each diocese.
